Cash memo vs bill vs receipt
A cash memo is a bill and receipt in one: it lists what was sold and confirms it was paid in cash on the spot. That is why shops use it for counter sales. For credit sales you issue a bill and later a receipt.

Cash memo book layout
Printed cash memo books are usually A6 or A5 with 50 numbered sets. Columns: Sr., Particulars, Qty, Rate, Amount, with a total box and “Rupees in words” line. Print your shop name and phone at the top and “Goods once sold will not be taken back” or your return policy at the bottom if you use one.
Cash memo in Excel
The Excel bill template works as a cash memo: change the title to CASH MEMO, delete the customer address rows, and print on half A4. Totals are formulas.
Frequently asked questions
Can a GST registered shop use a cash memo?
A registered shop selling taxable goods must issue a tax invoice (or a consolidated daily invoice for small sales to unregistered buyers who do not ask for one). A cash memo layout can be used if it carries the tax invoice details.
Is a cash memo valid proof of purchase?
Yes, a numbered and dated cash memo with the shop name is normal proof of purchase.
