Keeping wage records simply
- One slip per month per person.
- Same date each month. For example the 1st.
- Pay by UPI or bank where you can. The transfer is a second record.
- File both copies. A folder per year is enough.
When to move to a detailed slip
Once you register employees for PF or ESI, deduct TDS, or the employee needs slips for a home loan, switch to the detailed salary slip format with PAN, UAN and each deduction on its own line.
Frequently asked questions
Do small shops need to give salary slips?
Wage records are expected under labour laws. A simple monthly slip signed by both sides is an easy way to keep them.
Can I pay in cash and still give a slip?
Yes. See the cash salary slip format, which has a received line for the employee.
