When to give a cash receipt

Cash leaves no bank trail, so a cash receipt is the only proof for both sides. Give one for every cash payment you receive, even small ones if the payer asks. Keep a counterfoil or duplicate.

Cash receipt letter format

Sometimes a letter is needed, for example to confirm a cash deposit or a cash settlement. Write: date, “I, [name], confirm that I have received Rs [amount] ([words]) in cash from [name] on [date] towards [purpose]”, then sign, with a revenue stamp if above Rs 5,000.

What to include

Revenue stamp: under Article 53 of the Indian Stamp Act, a receipt for money above Rs 5,000 generally carries a Re 1 revenue stamp, signed across. Payments by cheque, bank transfer or UPI usually do not need one in practice. States can amend stamp law, so check your state rules or ask an accountant if unsure.
